Statistics

According to the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council in the USA, there were 5,6 million employer firms in the country in 2016. Of those, companies with less than 20 workers made up 89 %. Adding the number of non-employer businesses, then 98 % of employers in the US were small businesses. Furthermore smaller businesses were the ones that showed the biggest increase in employment in 2015. This was reported by the SBA’s Office of Advocacy in its 2018 Small Business Profile of the United States.

An article by Connolly, Norman and West, states that small business accounts “for almost half of employment in the private non-financial sector and over a third of production” in Australia .

In South Africa, 74 % of small businesses employ other workers besides the owner. But the contribution of formal small business to employment in South Africa is only 45 %. Not including agriculture in the GDP, small business contributed just under a third according to the Small Business Institute.

Main Reason for Small Business Failure

Clearly there is much room for growth for small business to improve employment in South Africa. But according to Prof. Pieter Steyn of Cranefield College a large number of small businesses in South Africa fail within the first two years. The main reason for this is poor management.

Here at Kanetwen we know from experience that poor management is often due to three issues:

Lack of finances – therefore we strive to make our services affordable;
Lack of time – so we come alongside and help to save some time;
Lack of systems, policies and procedures – so we provide affordable systems.

About Kanetwen

Kanetwen cc was started in 2004 as the next step in a dream to have a roaming business. Over the years we have offered services in cities and countries where we did not live. The Internet made this possible.

It all began in 1997 when we started offering part-time graphic and presentation design services. This expanded into the development of systems until 2004 when the business was formalised as Kanetwen cc.

Since then we have developed more than 150 training manuals for the water and wastewater treatment sector in South Africa.

Kanetwen also developed affordable management systems for small businesses. This included records management for private schools and human resource management for a furniture factory. There was also a daily resource schedule for a kitchen cabinet factory and a consulting system for a surgeon. The latest has been a laboratory information management system for aggregate and concrete laboratories. Using well-known software that is available on most computers for this development makes it affordable.
